What Kitchen and Bath Design Involves

Thoughtful Planning for Your Most-Used Spaces

Kitchen and bath design goes far beyond selecting finishes. These are high-function, high-investment spaces that require careful planning, technical coordination, and attention to detail.

We begin by understanding how you use your kitchen or bathroom every day. How you cook, entertain, store, move, and unwind. From there, I develop the layout, cabinetry, lighting, plumbing locations, materials, and finishes to create a space that balances beauty with long-term practicality.

Your project begins with a complete design package, giving you a clear plan to take into construction. Once the design is complete, you can move forward with your contractor independently or continue working with me for hourly project coordination and design support throughout the renovation.

Optional support can include contractor communication, site questions, procurement coordination, installation reviews, and design decisions that arise during construction. Giving you flexibility to choose the level of support that makes sense for your project and budget.

Kitchen & Bathroom Design May Include:

  • Space Planning & Layout Development

  • Cabinetry & Fixture Planning

  • Material, Finish & Lighting Selections

  • Design Drawings & Specifications

Optional Hourly Project Coordination:

  • Contractor Communication & Site Questions

  • Procurement & Order Coordination

  • Installation Reviews & Design Support

  • Final Styling & Finishing Support

How We Work Together

Your kitchen or bathroom project begins with a complete design package, giving you the layout, selections and documentation needed to move confidently into construction. Once the design is complete, you can take it forward independently with your contractor or continue working with me for optional hourly project coordination and implementation support.

Phase 1: Discovery & Project Direction

We begin by understanding how your current kitchen or bathroom functions, what isn’t working, and what you want the new space to accomplish. We’ll discuss your priorities, storage needs, style, renovation budget and any existing constraints so the design starts with a clear direction.

You’ll Receive:

  • Project proposal and agreement
  • Budget framework specific to kitchen or bath scope
  • Clear direction for the design phase

Timeline: 1-2 weeks

Phase 2: Design Development

This is where your kitchen or bathroom begins to take shape. I develop the layout, cabinetry and storage planning, appliance or fixture locations, lighting direction and overall design concept.

We’ll review the design together and refine it until the space feels both functional and aligned with your aesthetic.

You’ll Receive:

  • Scaled floor plans and layout options
  • Cabinetry and storage concepts
  • Preliminary material palette
  • Lighting and fixture direction

Timeline: 3-6 weeks

Phase 3: Material Selection & Design Documentation

Once the design direction is approved, we finalize the details needed to bring it to life. Cabinet finishes, countertops, tile, plumbing fixtures, hardware, lighting and other key selections are specified and organized into clear documentation for you, your contractor and trades.

You’ll Receive:

  • Detailed specification documents
  • Finish and material selections

  • Fixture and appliance selections

  • Design Drawings

  • Organized documentation for construction

Timeline: 4-8 weeks

Optional support during your renovation

Once your design package is complete, additional project coordination is available at an hourly rate. Choose as much, or as little support as your project needs.

Optional: Project coordination during construction

During construction, questions and unexpected decisions inevitably arise. If you’d like continued support, I can stay involved on an hourly basis to help communicate design intent, coordinate with your contractor and trades, review site conditions and resolve design questions as they come up.

Hourly Support May Include:

  • Contractor & trade communication

  • Site visits

  • Responding to construction questions

  • Reviewing installation against design

  • Resolving design issues during construction

Timeline: Varies based on construction schedule

Optional: Installation & Finishing Touches

As the renovation nears completion, hourly support can continue for final installation decisions, styling and finishing details so the completed space stays true to the original design.

Hourly Support May Include:

  • Delivery coordination (if applicable)
  • Installation oversight
  • Final styling and detailing
  • Hardware, lighting, and finishing decisions

  • Walk-through and care guidance

Thoughtful, Practical Design
Recommendations are grounded in how you actually live, not just what photographs well. We’ll consider function, flow, comfort and the realities of your home.
Healthier Material Thinking
Where relevant, I can help you look beyond aesthetics to consider material composition, durability, indoor air quality and healthier finish options.
Spend With Intention
Good design isn’t about choosing the most expensive option. I help you identify where your investment will make the biggest difference and avoid costly decisions you may regret later.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much should I budget for my kitchen or bathroom renovation?2026-09-02T21:08:33+00:00

Renovation costs can vary significantly depending on the size of the space, cabinetry, plumbing or electrical changes, material selections, appliances, fixtures and existing conditions. Rather than assuming the most expensive option is the best one, I help you make thoughtful decisions about where to invest and where it may make sense to save.

We’ll discuss your budget early in the design process so the design direction, selections and overall scope are grounded in an investment level you’re comfortable with.

Can you stay involved during the renovation?2026-09-02T21:04:06+00:00

Yes. Once your design package is complete, you can move forward independently with your contractor or continue working with me on an hourly basis for project coordination and design support. This can include contractor communication, site visits, procurement coordination, installation reviews and troubleshooting design questions as construction progresses.

What types of kitchen and bathroom projects do you work on?2026-09-02T20:36:59+00:00

I work on full kitchen renovations, primary ensuite remodels, secondary bathrooms, powder rooms and multi-room updates. Projects that involve layout changes, cabinetry, tile, lighting, plumbing or multiple design decisions benefit most from a structured design process.

How involved do I need to be?2026-09-02T20:54:31+00:00

As involved as you’d like. Some clients enjoy collaborating closely throughout the design process, while others prefer a more guided, hands-off experience. I’ll help narrow down options, organize decisions and keep the process moving so you’re not left trying to manage every detail on your own.

Do I need to have a contractor before hiring you?2026-09-02T20:56:03+00:00

Not necessarily. Starting with the design first can actually make it easier to approach contractors because you’ll have a clearer scope and direction for the project. If you already have a contractor, cabinet company or other trades involved, I’m happy to collaborate with them. If not, I can also help guide you on the next steps based on your project scope and location.

What’s included in kitchen and bathroom design services?2026-09-02T21:01:57+00:00

Your design package may include space planning, cabinetry and storage design, material and finish selections, plumbing fixtures, lighting direction, design drawings and organized specifications for construction. Your exact scope and deliverables are outlined before we begin.

Once the design package is complete, optional hourly project coordination is available if you’d like continued support with contractor communication, procurement, site questions, installation reviews and design decisions that arise during construction.
